Science class in the chicken yard! More info from our visit with Dr McCrea about preventing ammonia build up in your coop.
When you can smell ammonia at human nose height, the levels are already too high to be healthy at chicken height. (You know the smell I'm talking about -- the one that makes you wrinkle your nose ...).
Dr. McCrea demonstrated the science behind this fact with the litmus paper in the pic. Wet the paper with distilled water and then hold it a few in ... ches above the ground/coop floor under your roosting area (chicken height). The color the paper turns depends on the PH levels in the air.
PH levels need to be 4 or lower to keep fungi and pathogens down and to reduce ammonia levels that attract flies and affect the health of chickens. Chick Flic reduces the levels to about 2!! I have used it for years because it helps the odor in the coop but learned from Dr McCrea about its ability to actually lower PH levels in the air.
Bonus -- Chick Flic is easy to apply (Peter is giving me some pointers in the second pic) and doesn't take much product ...just shake or sift the granules over the affected area. And no chemicals.. it is made from clay. Ucenter Dress cocktail party wears in yellow
Bonus #2 -- Fewer flies! Ammonia attracts flies so less ammonia = fewer flies.
